Gas- und Wärme-Institut Essen e. V.

The Gas- und Wärme-Institut Essen e.V. (Gas and Heat Institute, short GWI) is a non-profit and independent research institute that has been involved in addressing the energy topics of the future together with its members, partners and customers for many decades. In the course of the energy transition, GWI has developed into an Energy Institute that is open to all types of technology and is engaged in numerous research projects at state, federal and EU level as well as application-oriented cooperation with industry. Due to the close interaction between the departments of Research and Development, Training and Consulting Center, Testing Laboratory and L-H Gas Market Conversion, GWI has created extensive possibilities to support the transformation of the energy system on all levels of the technology chain including production, supply and end-use. In addition to feasibility and potential studies, experimental investigations on H2 use of end applications in the heat and industrial sector are carried out at the GWI. The spectrum ranges from test stands for small fuel cells with outputs of less than 1 kW to semi-industrial high-temperature test stands up to 1.3 MW.

H2UB is the first European platform for start-ups operating in the hydrogen ecosystem. It connects start-ups and future founders with companies, funding partners and research institutes to successfully develop and bring innovative hydrogen ideas to market. H2UB offers access to the developing hydroverse and is a thriving and growing network to support the ramp-up of the European and global hydrogen market. Digital and physical event formats, such as the “H2UB Deep Dive” offer the opportunity for hydrogen start-ups and corporates to discuss topics in depth. In the accelerator programs “H2UB Sprint” and “H2UB Bootcamp” start-ups benefit from customized individual and group coaching sessions with mentors and industry experts.
