Wissenschaftsstadt Essen – Essen, the City of Science

The scientific landscape of a particular area is a central, locational factor. It attracts scientists, young talents and companies seeking interchange with science. The entire, local economic structure benefits from the varying forms of knowledge and technology transfer. This increases the competitiveness of the companies in the region.

Numerous local companies already use the potential of the "Wissenschaftsstadt Essen" with its more than 30,000 students, their numerous research and training facilities, as well as, important foundations.

Amongst others, the Duisburg-Essen University and the "FOM Hochschule für Oekonomie & Management" (University for Economics and Management) are two of the TOP 20 universities in Germany with regard to the number of students registered. Also included, is the "Folkwang Universität der Künste" (Folkwang University of Art) – one of the most distinguished art universities in Germany.

The fourth and youngest university in Essen is also a university of art and is the only one which is confined to Essen: The "Hochschule der Bildenden Künste" (The University of Fine Art) is located in Kupferdreh. Furthermore, there are study facilities from the "Hamburg Fernschule" (distance-learning school for technology, health and care), the "Steinbeis-Gesellschaft" (Steinbeis Transfer Institute NRW) and the "VWA-Gruppe - Verwaltungs- und Wirtschaftsakademie Essen" (Administration and Business Academy).

The renowned research institutes include "KWI - Kulturwissenschaftliche Institut Essen" (Institute for the Advanced Study in the Humanities), the "RWI - Rheinisch-Westfälische Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung" (Institute for Economic Research), the "ZfTI - Zentrum für Türkeistudien und Integrationsforschung" (Center for Turkish Studies and Integration Research) and the "GWI - Gas- und Wärme-Institut Essen e.V." (Institute for Gas and Heat).

In addition, Essen’s "Universitätsklinikum" (University Hospital) is the largest, centrally-located, single-site complexes in the Ruhr area. Besides its outstanding medical care, it also has a range of high-performance research projects.

Initiative "Wissenschaftsstadt Essen"

The initiative "Wissenschaftsstadt Essen" brings together universities, research facilities, as well as, additional supporting institutions and participants from the business sector, foundations, education, politics and municipal administration to jointly create an interlinked, innovative "Wissenschaftsstadt".

The "Transferfinder" provided by the "Wissenschaftsstadt Essen" website, has a unique function: Companies can, with a few clicks find, in the often "confusing jungle" of research topics, the right point of contact and the scientific project to suit their innovative requirements.
